VFAM

VIRGINIA FAMILIES for ACCESS to MIDWIFERY

About us

Virginia is for Midwives

We are a consumer advocacy and civil rights organization dedicated to supporting midwives. Our mission is to advocate for freedom of decision for all women in their prenatal, birthing, and postnatal care. We support legislation that facilitates access to midwifery and fight legislation that limits it. We support autonomy for midwives and oppose policy that prevents them from applying the full scope of their credentials. We provide avenues for communication among pregnant women, their care providers, and policymakers, and provide informational materials to further support this mission.

Supporting Consumer Choice

VFAM supports full autonomy for women in their birthing choices. When legislation arises that could limit access to midwifery, and thereby limit the birthing choices available to consumers, VFAM steps in to provide a voice for mothers, partners, families, and midwives.

Supporting Midwives

In Virginia, the freedoms we enjoy, and the restrictions we suffer, are being fought for daily by our midwifery organizations, who work and pay for a voice in our state government. VFAM is here to stand up for midwives so that they can focus on doing their job in peace.

Midwives, from anywhere and of any training pathway: we urge you to reach out to VFAM and guide our action. How are you being limited from providing the standard of care? How can we make your community more baby-friendly? What else can we, your clients, do to support you?

I’ve come to believe that it’s vitally important for all women to give birth in environments in which they feel safe and supported—and I’ve experienced first-hand that midwives create those environments.
